Summer Reading Information

Summer Reading Writing Prompt

In the Summer Reading 2008 selections, courage is displayed in various ways by different people. Write an essay in which you agree or disagree with one of the above quotes about courage. Identify people and events from the book(s) and give clear examples to support your position.

Before you read�

  • select a book and ask yourself �Why does this book interest me?�
  • infer what the title implies about the book.
  • read the summary of the book, what can you discover about the character/person or people,
  • author or setting of the book?

As you read�

  • select one of the quotes on courage from the choices above that appeals to you.
  • mark at least three details or events proving or disproving your quote.

Before you write, check requirements�

  • On-level students are required to write a three paragraph essay on one of the books from the NWHS summer reading list.
  • Honor students are required to write a five paragraph essay with support from two of the books from the NWHS summer reading list.
  • AP English students are required to write a five paragraph essay with support from one book from the AP summer reading list. (AP students will complete an additional summer reading assignment for their AP teacher)
  • Responses should be typed using 12 point font size, Times New Roman font and be double-spaced.

As you write�

  • brainstorm ideas.
  • organize ideas into an outline/graphic-organizer.
  • review the Rubric for Summer Reading 2008.
  • follow essay and paragraph rules.
  • create a rough draft.
  • proof read your assignment aloud listening for correct grammar, and looking for correct spelling and punctuation.
  • have someone else proof-read your work.
  • create your final copy with a heading: name, date, course level and book title.
The completed assignment is due the first day of school �Tuesday, August 26, 2008. This grade will count as 5% of your 1st marking period grade in English.

Rubric for Summer Reading 2008

  • 6 The paper is clear, forceful and convincing. The writer�s insights are highly original and the details are gripping, unique and enriching. Uses a precise organizational strategy which enhances the purpose. The writing seems flawless. The writer uses standard writing conventions effectively and purposefully.

  • 5 The paper has support/ elaboration which enhance ideas, although these may not completely fulfill the purpose. Uses an effective organizational strategy that is consistent with the purpose. The writing has no errors in usage or conventions that interfere with meaning.

  • 4 The paper has support and elaboration which may be uneven or incomplete. Uses an inconsistent or unevenly applied organizational strategy. The writing has few, if any, errors in usage or conventions that interfere with meaning.

  • 3 The paper has incomplete or unclear elaboration and support for development of ideas. Uses an organizational structure that is inconsistent or unclear. The writing has errors in usage or conventions, some of which distract the reader and interfere with meaning.

  • 2 The paper has support and elaboration that is inadequate. Uses an unstructured or confusing organizational strategy. The writing has errors in usage and conventions, some of which interfere with meaning.

  • 1 The writing has no elaboration or support, or the development does not support the writing purpose. Uses little or no organizational structure. The writing has errors in usage and conventions which interfere with meaning.
