Northwest High School

Safety and Security: A Call to Action

Updates

Three parent meetings were held in early May to discuss issues related to safety and security. At each meeting, attendees divided into small groups and brainstormed responses to the following two questions:

1. What is your greatest safety and security concern at Northwest High School?

2. What is the most important aspect or characteristic of Northwest High School that should remain or continue?

The small groups then shared and discussed their responses with all of the meeting attendees.

Concerns expressed at the meetings included the need to enhance communication with parents regarding safety and security issues, the importance of ensuring consistent implementation of procedures and policies, and the desire to increase the level of respect between and among students and staff members. Important characteristics of the school that should continue, as noted at the meetings, included the caring teachers, the excellent programs, the high expectations for students, and the level of parent involvement with staff members.

As a result of these meetings, the Northwest High School Climate & Culture Committee has been formed to develop a list of recommendations and corresponding action plans, in addition to a communication plan. The Northwest High School Climate & Culture Committee is composed of students, parents, school staff members, and representatives from central office administration.
